I had gone through many experiences while growing up that made me believe in spirit guides through different things I had felt, seen, and heard, and even in dreams. In 1986 I began to consciously develop a relationship with them. I believed that by doing so, they could help me with my healing and in every area of my life. I was right.
I worked every day to learn to hear and feel them. I asked them to help me with this. I asked them to help me to learn to trust them and the information I was getting.
I asked them to help me to learn to differentiate what was coming from them versus my ego. This was tricky, and I still ask for help to this day to know when it’s them. I asked for signs to show me what was coming from them and help for me to see and understand the signs. My abilities grew stronger over time.
In 1994 they jumped to a whole new level. I was living in Malibu and was doing breathwork with clients. I had started my practice in 1987 and over time, had developed my own way of doing it beyond what I had been taught in my Practitioner/Teacher and Master Teacher certification programs.
One of the things I do is to invite my spirit guides, Teachers and the Ascended Masters into the sessions. The Ascended Masters consist of different masters who have lived on the planet such as Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Mary, and Quan Yin to name a few.
I can always feel the guides and Masters in the room in sessions and there have been many, many times when I have seen and heard them. They love to help with healing and they are really happy when someone begins to open up to them and to consciously work with them.
I would always ask for help from them during sessions, but I wouldn’t ask very much for help for me in my life. I had this crazy belief they must be too busy to help little, old me.
I went through a period when every day I could hear them say to me, “You’re not asking enough. You’re not asking enough.” I began to make sure I asked for help once a day. Again, I heard, “You’re not asking enough. You need to ask for help with everything."
Finally, when I trained myself to ask for help and guidance from them several times a day, I stopped hearing it. (They’re really good at helping me find something when I lose it.)
To this day there are times when I forget to ask for their help and guidance, but not often. When I do, as quickly as I can remember, I ask again. I even ask them to help me remember to ask for their help, and they do. I encourage you to develop a relationship with your guides and to ask for help with everything in your life.

My first signs felt subtle but deeply familiar
My earliest experiences were not loud or theatrical. They were soft.
I would feel a warm presence near me during difficult moments, especially when I was crying, praying, or asking for help without really knowing who I was asking. Sometimes I felt pressure around my shoulders, almost like someone standing behind me with their hands gently resting there.
I also began having brief visions during meditation. Nothing forced. More like images floating across the inner screen of my mind: wings, gold light, violet flames, an old temple, a rose opening. Each image brought a feeling with it. Calm. Love. Safety. Encouragement.
That feeling became my anchor.
Guidance from spirit guides often carries a tone of love, even when the message is direct.
Breathwork helped me open the channel
Breathwork changed everything for me because it gave my nervous system a way to settle. When my mind was racing, I could not hear much beyond worry. When I breathed with intention, my body softened, and the messages became clearer.
I usually begin with a simple practice:
Sit comfortably with both feet on the floor or lie down.
Place one hand on the heart and one on the belly.
Inhale slowly through the nose for four counts.
Exhale gently through the mouth for six counts.
Repeat until the body feels less guarded.
After a few minutes, I say something like:
“I invite in my highest, most loving guides, angels, teachers, and protectors. Only beings aligned with divine love, truth, and healing are welcome here.”
That invitation matters. It sets the tone. It also reminds me that I am not trying to force an experience. I am entering a relationship.
During healing sessions, I often invite specific guides and beings of light, depending on what feels appropriate. I may call on Archangel Michael for protection and courage, Archangel Raphael for healing energy, Archangel Gabriel for clear messages, and Archangel Chamuel for heart support.
I also feel connected to Ascended Masters such as Quan Yin, who brings compassion, Jesus, who carries deep unconditional love, Mother Mary, who feels nurturing and gentle, and Saint Germain, who I associate with transformation and violet light.
These names may feel familiar to you, or they may not. That is okay. The relationship is personal. Start with the guides who feel loving, safe, and aligned for you.

How I learned to tell guidance from ego
This was one of the biggest lessons for me. Not every inner voice is guidance. Some messages come from fear, old wounds, or the ego trying to stay in control.
For me, spirit guide messages usually feel:
Calm, even when they are firm
Loving, never cruel
Simple and clear
Patient, not pushy
Supportive of healing and responsibility
Ego messages tend to feel different. They often arrive with urgency, panic, comparison, or a need to prove something. Ego says, “You have to fix this right now.” Guidance says, “Take the next honest step.”
Ego often spirals. Guidance lands.
One practice that helps is asking, “Does this message expand my heart or contract my body?” My body usually knows before my mind does. If I feel tight, rushed, or afraid, I pause. If I feel grounded, open, and quietly certain, I listen more closely.
I also ask for confirmation. Not in a demanding way, but gently. I might say, “If this is truly guidance, please show me in a way I can understand.” Sometimes confirmation comes through a repeated phrase, a dream, a song, a conversation, or a sudden sense of peace.
Discernment grows with practice. You do not need to get it perfect.
Asking for help made daily life feel less heavy
For a long time, I only asked for spiritual help when I felt desperate. I treated my guides like emergency support instead of daily companions.
Now I ask for help with small things too.
Before a session, I ask to be guided. Before a hard conversation, I ask for the right words. When I feel overwhelmed, I ask Archangel Michael to help me feel safe and clear. When my heart hurts, I ask Quan Yin or Mother Mary to surround me with compassion.
This does not mean I hand over my choices. I still take responsibility for my life. But I no longer feel like I have to carry everything alone.
The benefits have been quiet but powerful:
I feel more supported during uncertain moments.
I trust my intuition more.
I recover faster when fear takes over.
I notice signs and synchronicities more easily.
I feel more connected to love, even on hard days.
Spiritual healing is personal, and it is not a replacement for medical or mental health care. But as a supportive practice, asking for help has brought me comfort, clarity, and a sense of companionship that I deeply value.
A simple way to begin connecting today
If you want to build your own relationship with your guides, keep it simple. You do not need special tools or perfect silence.
Try this for a week:
Take three slow breaths each morning.
Say, “Guides of love and truth, please support me today.”
Ask one clear question.
Notice what you feel, hear, dream, or sense.
Write it down without judging it.
Ask questions like:
“What do I need to know today?”
“What would help me feel more supported?”
“What am I not seeing clearly?”
“What is the next loving step?”
Then pay attention. Guidance may come as a feeling, a memory, a sudden idea, a body sensation, or a dream. It may arrive right away, or it may unfold during the day.
The key is consistency. Relationships grow through regular contact. Your guides do not need fancy words. They respond to sincerity.
You are allowed to ask more often
One of the kindest things I have learned is that help is available more often than we think. We do not have to wait until life falls apart. We can ask in the morning, in the car, before sleep, during grief, during joy, and in the middle of ordinary choices.
The journey of connecting with spirit guides has made me feel less alone and more willing to trust the quiet wisdom moving through my life. It has taught me that guidance is not always dramatic. Sometimes it is one calm breath, one loving nudge, one dream you cannot forget.
Start there. Ask. Breathe. Listen. Then take the next gentle step.
In love and appreciation,
Maren Nelson
